What are the hindrances in the development of tourism of a country ?
August 29, 2008 - I want the hindrances which come in between the way of the development of tourism in a particular country . The factors due to which the tourism rate of a country declines . Please help me .
- Crime is always number one factor in tourism decline. See Alcapulco mexico which used to be a huge spot. --Rise in prices in also a big factor. Cities that used to offer great deals ( london) are now horribly expensive and harder to travel for people on a budget. -- Govt instability. When a place is suffering from political problems, it will drive tourists away
If you want to go deep, then the major problem for any country trying to develop as a tourist destination is perception. For instance, Pakistan is currently spending a lot on trying to get more tourists into the country, but for many people Pakistan simply has negative connotations, and they won't even consider it. The same can be said for much of Eastern Europe, it simply has connotations which preclude tourism. The best way to promote tourism in countries which aren't typical destinations is to boost the economy of particular cities, and sell them as attractive destinations. Abu Dhabi and Dubai are prime examples of this, and in the near future Manama may well join them. Tourism declines due to a lack of spending in my mind. Some places such as Rome and Barcelona will always have a market because they have an attractive history, but if places are not advertised and do not have attractive points of entry, then slowly hotels and tourist attractions will start to suffer, and tourism levels will fall accordingly.
I work with communities in developing tourism. The single biggest factor: Whether or not the community sees tourism as an economic driver... takes it seriously. Community understanding and buy-in regarding the benefits of tourism is essential to development of the industry. Are they willing to commit financial and human resources to assist in developing the destination... Political will by local politicians to take tourism seriously is essential. So many communities see tourism as a "last resort" (no pun intended!) and are still chasing smokestacks rather than dedicating time and energy to developing tourism. Once this happens, obstacles can be addressed and the destination can build a plan to develop products to position themselves to attract desired markets.
